
The above 1935 map shows the areas where the Eastern Karelian and Vepsä people live(d). The area is between Lake Ladoga (Laatokka) on the left, and Lake
Onega (Äänisjärvi) on the right, mostly south of Syväri. Karelian is quite understandable to Finns; the Vepsä dialect is hard for Finns to understand and it has a lot of Russian loan words, and the Korelian people further east are Finns in their cultural traits but have been Russified even more
linguistically.
